What is H. Pylori?

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a bacteria that lives in the inner lining of the stomach. About 40% of people in the UK have H Pylori so it is very common and usually gives no symptoms. H. pylori can cause long-lasting irritation, swelling and pain in the stomach (known as ‘severe chronic atrophic gastritis’ or SCAG) and stomach ulcers which may lead to cancer.

What are the symptoms of an H. Pylori infection?

H Pylori can produce excess acid which may cause ulcers or inflammation resulting in indigestion and heartburn symptoms. H Pylori is the most common causes of peptic ulcer disease, with 95% of duodenal and 70–80% of gastric ulcers associated with it. Occasionally this can manifest into more serious complications when the ulcer bleeds or bursts.

When should I get tested for H. Pylori?

You should get tested for H. Pylori if:

• • You have indigestion or heartburn that has not responded to standard treatment such as Gaviscon or Nexium (Proton Pump Inhibitor)
  • If you are at higher risk such as older people, individuals of North African ethnicity, and those living in a known high-risk area
  • If you have a history of peptic ulcers or bleeds

You can request first-line eradication “Triple therapy” treatment through our pharmacy if your H Pylori test is positive. This is a separate service from this test. Treatment is currently £45. Treatment is only provided if clinically indicated after completing an online consultation for our prescriber to review and check whether treatment is suitable.
