We measure two markers:
Lipase
Lipase is an enzyme chiefly produced by the pancreas and helps break down dietary fats. Tiny quantities circulate in the bloodstream under normal conditions; however, when pancreatic cells become inflamed—as in pancreatitis—or when there is an obstruction such as from gallstones, larger amounts of lipase leak into the blood. This can be detected using this simple blood test to check if your Pancreas is working as it should.
This is a self-collection blood test which you can do alongside the Elastase test at home.
Elastase
Elastase is an enzyme that travels through your digestive system and is excreted in your stool (poo). By measuring the amount of elastase in your stool, you can assess how well your pancreas is functioning. Low levels of elastase may indicate that your pancreas isn’t producing enough digestive enzymes, a condition known as pancreatic insufficiency.
The pancreas plays a vital role in digestion by producing enzymes that help break down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates from the food you eat. These enzymes are released into your gut, where they help release nutrients so they can be absorbed into your bloodstream.
When the pancreas doesn’t make or release enough of these enzymes, digestion becomes less effective. This is called pancreatic insufficiency. The severity of the condition—and the symptoms it causes—can vary from person to person.
This test is non-invasive, easy to do at home, and gives valuable information about the health of your pancreas. You need to take a stool sample and send it off to our laboratory.
You can also book an appointment at our clinic in London or Macclesfield or have a nurse visit your home to have your blood taken professionally by one of our Phlebotomists. Contact us on 01625 568 188 or send a product enquiry for more information
