About This Test
This test measures the level of the protein Calprotectin in faeces, which is elevated in people who have Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
- DO YOU HAVE SYMPTOMS? – Stomach pain or cramps, bloating, diarrhoea (sometimes frequent with blood) or constipation, weight loss, extreme tiredness or a change in bowel habits, are all symptoms of gut inflammation conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Over 500,000 people in the UK live with IBD. Find out if you are suffering from IBS or IBD with this simple, reliable, and accurate stool test
- WHY TEST FOR GUT INFLAMMATION? – Over 500,000 people in the UK live with IBD. IBD is a lifelong condition with a peak diagnosis between 15 – 40 years. Symptoms can often present as early as 10 years before diagnosis. Early diagnosis and treatment for IBD are important to prevent life-threatening complications which can often lead to emergency surgery being required as well as an increased risk of mortality & disease progression. IBD can also put you at risk of colon cancer. to check for any blood in your colon which may indicate bowel cancer. Results are usually available the same working day from the lab receiving your sample, giving you an exact reading of the amount of blood (if any) in your stool
- FAST, DISCREET AND ACCURATE – No appointment or visit to your GP or Pharmacy. We’ll send your sample collection kit out to you, this can be delivered to any UK address (Including the Channel Islands and Isle of Man). Take a small faecal sample from the comfort of your home and send it off in the discreet pre-paid mailing bag to our UKAS-accredited lab for an accurate and reliable result usually within 48 hours of receiving it. The test looks at the level of Calprotectin, a protein biomarker that is present in the faeces when intestinal inflammation occurs
- UK RECOMMENDED TEST – This test is recommended by the UK Health Watchdog, NICE, as a reliable non-invasive way to rule out IBD and to avoid the need for patients with IBS to go through endoscopy. IBD and IBS are two very different medical conditions. This test can also be used by patients suffering from IBD to assess the efficacy of treatment and predict the risk of flare-ups

What is Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the colon and small intestine. IBD is an autoimmune disease. This means the body’s own immune system attacks parts of the digestive system resulting in chronic inflammation of gut.
The major types of IBD are Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Ulcerative colitis only affects the colon (large intestine), while Crohn’s disease can affect the entire digestive system, from the mouth to the anus.
IBD symptoms can often present as early as 10 years before diagnosis. Although on-set can be at any age, IBD is usually diagnosed in people in their late teens or early 20s, with a peak diagnosis between 15 – 40 years.
What is Calprotectin?
Calprotectin is a protein biomarker that is present in the faeces when intestinal inflammation occurs. Calprotectin levels are significantly elevated in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and therefore it is recommended by the UK Health Watchdog, NICE, as a reliable non-invasive test to rule out IBD and to avoid the need for patients IBS to go through endoscopy.
