What does this test detect?

An all-in-one PCR test checks for four of the most common respiratory viruses:

• Flu A (Influenza A): A highly contagious seasonal virus that often causes moderate to severe symptoms.

• Flu B (Influenza B): Another major seasonal flu virus, typically causing similar symptoms to Flu A but usually aless serious than Flu A.

• COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2): The virus responsible for COVID-19, which can range from mild cold-like illness to more serious respiratory disease.

• RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus): A common virus that can be severe in infants, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.

What is influenza?

Influenza (flu) is a viral infection that affects the nose, throat, and lungs. The two main types are influenza A and B, with influenza A typically causing more severe illness. Flu symptoms usually begin suddenly with a high fever, dry cough, headaches, chills, and muscle aches. A stuffy nose, sore throat, and sneezing may follow, and tiredness can continue for several weeks. Nausea or diarrhoea may also be present. The flu is more severe than a common cold, which usually causes milder, gradual symptoms like a runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes, and throat irritation, without fever or body aches.

Anyone can catch the flu with children and older people with a higher rate of infection.

What is RSV?

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms such as a runny or blocked nose, cough, sneezing, tiredness, and sometimes a high temperature. While most infections clear on their own, RSV can be more serious in babies and older adults, potentially leading to pneumonia or bronchiolitis. More severe symptoms can include worsening cough, shortness of breath, fast or irregular breathing, difficulty feeding, wheezing, loss of appetite, and confusion in older adults.
