• Iron deficiency anaemia affects around 2–5% of adult men and postmenopausal women in the UK. It is estimated 500 million people worldwide are affected by iron deficiency anaemia
• Our Iron and Ferritin test looks at the amount of iron, ferritin, transferrin, and total iron binding capacity (TIBC) in your blood.
• Iron deficiency anaemia is the most common cause of anaemia. If you have low iron this can in-turn cause a low number of red blood cells to be produced. Red blood cells are important for carrying oxygen around your body to your organs and tissues and a reduction in red blood cells will therefore mean less oxygen will reach your organs and tissues. The resulting symptoms include:
  • Tiredness and lack of energy
  • Shortness of breath
  • Heart palpitations

This ensures that your blood sample is collected seamlessly and reduces the chances of haemolysis (where we can’t test your sample).
