Frequently Asked Questions About Our Bowel Cancer Screening FIT Test
What is the difference between this test and the cheaper at-home instant result test?
This is a quantitative test and is the only test recommended in the UK by NICE for first-line screening for Bowel Cancer. This is because it is specific to the lower GI tract and has a 97% or greater accuracy rate in screening for bowel cancer.
Is this the same test used by the NHS?
Yes, this is a NICE-approved test used by the NHS. The difference between our FIT test and the FIT test used in the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme is the threshold for determining a positive result. We use the lower NICE-recommended symptomatic threshold for determining a positive result that requires referral for an investigation into Bowel Cancer at 10 μg/g. The screening programme uses a much higher threshold for determining a positive result. typically between 80 to 120 μg/g. If you would like more information about this, please feel free to call us or WhatsApp us on 01625 568 188
Do I need to prepare for the test?
No. Unlike other screening tests, such as the guaiac faecal occult blood test (FOBT), there are no dietary or medication restrictions and only one bowel movement (sample) is required for testing
How do I take the test?
Everything you need to take the test is included in your test kit. Take a small poo sample from the comfort of your home and send it off in the pre-paid unbranded and discreet mailing bag to our UKAS-accredited lab for testing. You can post this at any postbox, Post Office, or Royal Mail sorting office. Results are usually available the same working day from the lab receiving your sample, giving you an exact reading of the amount of blood (if any) in your stool.
What if my results are abnormal?
If your results are abnormal, we will contact you to go through the next steps, answer any questions you may have, and provide a free referral letter to provide to your GP.
