About our PSA Test?
Our PSA (at-home) test is an accurate quantitative test that measures the level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in your blood.
Prostate cancer may cause PSA levels to be elevated and these elevated levels can be detected from a simple fingerprick blood test.
We recommend this test only if you are confident in getting enough blood from a finger-prick blood sample to send back to our lab.
Prefer to have a nurse take your sample?
You can book an appointment at our clinic in London or near Manchester in Macclesfield to have a nurse take your sample.
About Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA)
PSA levels can increase naturally as you get older and elevated PSA levels may be due to other conditions such as an enlarged prostate or prostatitis.
If your results are abnormal, we offer a free referral letter which you can provide to your NHS GP. Our test results should not be used as a formal diagnosis nor as part of a care or treatment plan but offer you information to make an informed decision about your health.
You should consider the benefits and limitations of a PSA test first to help you decide whether this test is appropriate for you.
The benefits of having a PSA test include:
- Early detection — PSA testing may lead to prostate cancer being detected before symptoms develop.
- Early treatment — detecting prostate cancer early before symptoms develop may extend life or facilitate a complete cure.
The limitations of a PSA test include:
- False positives – A raised PSA level does not mean you have prostate cancer. About 75% of men with a raised PSA level (3 nanograms/mL or higher) have a negative prostate biopsy. A raised PSA level may eventually lead to further invasive investigations, like a biopsy, which may cause anxiety.
- False negative – About 15% of people with a normal PSA level may have prostate cancer, and 2% will have high-grade cancer
