A full Iron profile blood test to identify any iron deficiency or anaemia
Our Iron Profile blood test looks at the amount of iron, ferritin, transferrin, and total iron binding capacity (TIBC) in your blood. Iron deficiency anaemia is the most common cause of anaemia. If you have low iron this can in turn cause a low number of red blood cells to be produced. Red blood cells are important for carrying oxygen around your body to your organs and tissues and a reduction in red blood cells will therefore mean less oxygen will reach your organs and tissues. The resulting symptoms include:
- Tiredness and lack of energy
- Shortness of breath
- Heart palpitations
If you have any of these symptoms you may wish to find out your iron levels but many people with iron deficiency anaemia only have a few symptoms
We also recommend getting this test alongside our Bowel Cancer Screening Test as it has been shown that iron deficiency anaemia may give a false negative for FIT tests and an adjustment for the cut-off value for determining a positive result for the bowel cancer screening test may be required
Results are usually available within 24-48 hours from your appointment day. They will be available to view and download from your secure online account with a clinical comment from our medical team
