A simple blood test that screens for Coeliac disease
Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system attacks its tissues when you eat gluten. This causes chronic inflammation of the small intestine (the gut), which can lead to malabsorption of nutrients.
Coeliac disease is a common condition. At least 1 in every 100 people in the UK has Coeliac Disease with an estimated 500,000 people still undiagnosed. Coeliac Disease is often undiagnosed because symptoms are very similar to other conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
Coeliac disease must be diagnosed as soon as possible as it can lead to complications including osteoporosis, ulcerative jejunitis, vitamin D deficiency, iron deficiency, and even cancer (Lymphoma and small bowel cancer)
Undiagnosed coeliac disease has also been linked to unexplained infertility problems in women
